Net Metering in Uttar Pradesh: Process, Rules & Timeline (2026)

12 February 20265 min read

Net metering is what turns a rooftop solar system from "daytime-only savings" into "my whole bill dropped 90%". It's also the stage where badly-handled solar projects get stuck for months. Here's how it actually works in Uttar Pradesh.

What net metering does

A bidirectional meter replaces your ordinary meter and counts energy in both directions:

  • Import: units you draw from the grid (night, cloudy spells)
  • Export: surplus solar units you push into the grid (sunny afternoons)

Your bill charges you for import minus export. Export more than you use in a month and the surplus carries forward as credit to future bills. Effectively, the grid becomes your free battery.

Who can apply in UP

  • Any consumer with a legal connection under DVVNL, Torrent Power (Agra city) or other UP DISCOMs
  • Rooftop system capacity within your sanctioned load and scheme limits
  • Grid-connected systems installed with approved (ALMM/BIS) components

If your desired system exceeds your sanctioned load, a load-enhancement application comes first — a routine step we handle regularly.

The process

1. Online application on the DISCOM/UPNEDA portal with connection details and system specification 2. Feasibility approval — the DISCOM checks transformer capacity and connection status (typically 1–2 weeks) 3. Installation of the solar system by an empanelled vendor 4. Inspection — DISCOM engineers verify the installation, protections and earthing 5. Meter installation — the bidirectional meter goes in and the system is officially synchronized

Realistic end-to-end timeline in the Agra region: 3–6 weeks after installation, assuming clean documentation. Our record is 12 days; badly-prepared files from elsewhere have taken 6 months.

Where applications get stuck

  • Mismatched names between the electricity connection and application
  • System capacity exceeding sanctioned load with no enhancement filed
  • Missing test certificates for inverters or panels
  • Nobody following up — files don't move themselves

This is why we attend the DISCOM inspection personally and track every file to meter installation. It's included free with every Uptronics installation, and we also offer standalone net-metering service for systems other vendors installed and abandoned.

Reading your first net-metered bill

Your bill will show import units, export units and net billed units. Many customers panic seeing "import" — remember, that's only your night consumption; check the *net* figure. A correctly-sized system in Agra should net out 80–95% of your previous bill across the year, with monsoon months slightly higher and summer months often at zero.
